Background to percentage calculation

Percentage changes are commonplace in the financial world. A share price rises by 20 percent after the close of trading, a company struggles with a 15 percent drop in turnover - the inflation rate is currently 8.7 percent. One percent is the ratio of one to 100 and percentages can therefore be written as a fraction. In percentage calculations, a basic distinction is made between the basic value, percentage value and percentage rate.

What is the basic value?
If you want to know how many people took part in a study, you ask for the basic value. The basic value therefore always corresponds to 100 percent - you are always asking for the total number. A fictitious example: If 10.5 million Bitcoin corresponds to 50 percent of all coins in the cyber currency, the base value is 21 million. The formula for calculating the base value is Base value = percentage value/percentage x 100.

What is the percentage value?
A share price has fallen by 10 percent after the close of trading. The share was previously quoted at 155 dollars. In this case, the reduced value of the share is the percentage value. In this example, it amounts to 140 dollars. The formula for the percentage value: Percentage value = base value x percentage (%)

What is the percentage?
In most cases, the number with the percentage sign represents the percentage. Example: There are a total of 4.99 billion Apple shares in circulation. Of these, 225 million are held by JPMorgan Chase. Accordingly, the latter accounts for 4.5 percent of the share structure. The formula for calculating the percentage is as follows: Percentage (%) = percentage value/basic value

Calculating percentage changes
If percentage changes are to be calculated, the difference between the initial and final values must first be calculated. The result is then divided by the initial value. An example: A company increases its turnover from 1.6 million dollars to 2.9 million dollars compared to the same period in the previous year. By what percentage has turnover increased? The calculation:
2.9 – 1.6 = 1.3
1.3 / 1.6 = 0.81

The company increased its turnover by 81% compared to the same period last year. Percentage declines can also be calculated in this way.
